Why I don't believe in 'Soul Contracts'

And explaining algebra to ants...

Sometimes I have to laugh because we can take very beautiful, spiritual concepts and use them as yet another tool to beat ourselves up with.

The idea that we come to live here on earth with some sort of ‘purpose’ in mind is a concept as old as time. We have always asked ‘why are we here’?! There must be a reason right? And then we use our little 3D human brains to try and figure it out. Like asking an ant to solve an algebra equation.

The concept of a ‘Soul Contract’ is often used to describe the idea that we have an energetic agreement that your soul makes before incarnating—what you came here to experience, learn, and contribute. The idea is that we can use our Astrology charts (and other tools) to understand what the Soul Contract is because of course when we arrive here on earth we totally forget any sort of plan we had to be here, or even that planning to be here was a thing.

However the problem is that we are applying a very patriarchal 3D filter - I have read books that share ideas like before we come here to earth we are sitting around some sort of cosmic table planning out who we’ll meet and what karma we’ll help each other out with. It had very ‘corporate boardroom’ vibes.

This is not to put anyone’s ideas down - who knows what happens right?! But my point is that we need to be careful of using these ideas as yet another way to feel like we are somehow failing at life. I really don’t believe we came here to constantly beat ourselves up and be so critical of ourselves. I see too many people (mainly women) feeling like they are not enough if they don’t fulfil their ‘purpose’ (on top of being a mother, wife, paying the bills, keeping healthy etc).

How about this instead…

My interpretation to offer here is thinking of life a bit like how we’d try something like archery the first time. We give it a go, but if we don’t immediately start hitting bullseyes back to back we don’t start beating ourselves up. Perhaps you didn’t expect the target to be so far away, perhaps it’s windy, perhaps your bow is not quite straight, perhaps your eyesight isn’t that great. Perhaps the target is really small…

Or another analogy that comes to mind is something like going down a very fast waterslide - the first time you try it, you can’t control exactly how you go down, only with hindsight you can think “oh I should’ve leaned a bit more that way when it turned”

So how can our Astrology charts help us navigate something like a slow motion waterslide?!

So my thinking on this is that we chose to come and experience life with a certain filter, or to continue the analogy, we pick a particular slide to have a go on. Recognising our innate gifts, challenges helps us navigate the turns more effectively, and also helps us not compare our journey to someone else who’s on a completely different slide to you.

OK I think that’s as far as I can take the slide analogy… but seriously. Yes I think Astrology, Human Design, Gene Keys, Numerology… ALL these tools are so valuable for helping us remember that we are a soul having a temporary human experience in a body… and that as Ram Dass said, we went to ‘Somebody school’ in our childhood to learn how to be ‘somebody’ but what if the real truth of who you are is not that?

What if the real truth is we came here just to experience what it’s like living in this 3D world where time moves in a fixed way, where there is cause and effect. The ‘point’ from that POV then is just to experience each moment, to enjoy the ride, and help others to do the same. Ultimately I believe when we die, we move back into existing in a place where time is not linear… from that point of view, death is not a loss but a doorway to a ‘place’ where you can experience anything at any time… I’ll share my views on that in my next post…
